Overview

In the upper right portion of the abdomen, there is a small organ called the gallbladder. This is where the bile produced by the liver is stored. Sometimes, this digestive fluid becomes hard, leading to gallstones.

These gallstones can be very small in size or can be as large as a golf ball at times. Only when they block the flow of bile do you begin to experience symptoms. There are usually two types of gallstones:

  • Cholesterol stones: These stones are mostly made of cholesterol and are yellowish green in colour.

Pigment stones: These stones are primarily made of bilirubin and appear darker in colour.

Symptoms

You should visit a gallstone doctor when you experience the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the upper right region of the abdomen
  • Pain in the back or right shoulder
  • Digestive issues like gas, heartburn and indigestion
  • Vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Prolonged pain in the belly
  • Yellowish tinge in the eyes and skin
  • Light coloured faeces
  • Dark urine

Usually individuals who have gallstones are asymptomatic, which means that they do not experience any pain or discomfort. Only when the gallstones cause issues with bile movement will the symptoms begin to show.

Causes

There is some uncertainty about the actual causes of gallstones. The possible causes are as follows:

  • Excessive cholesterol in the bile as it is not dissolved properly.
  • Excessive bilirubin in the bile. This is common in individuals who have infections, blood disorders or liver issues like cirrhosis when the liver produces too much bilirubin.

The gallbladder isn’t emptied fully, making the bile concentrated.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of gallstones begins with a physical exam. You may have to get imaging tests like CT scan and MRI done to confirm the presence of a gallstone. Modern testing methods for gallstones include:

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography
  • Cholescintigraphy

Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography

Treatment

There are different options for gallstones treatment in Delhi:

  • Natural remedies: A gallbladder flush is one of the best options to treat the condition naturally. This is an effective gallbladder treatment without surgery. Besides this, consuming apple juice or apple cider vinegar is also known to be beneficial in getting rid of gallstones naturally.
  • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This is the most preferred method for gallstone removal. A small tube with a light and video camera is inserted through the belly. Then, the gallstones are removed. In most cases, patients have the entire gallbladder removed.
  • Open cholecystectomy: This is a traditional surgery where the doctor makes a larger cut in the belly to remove the gall bladder.

Medication: To treat gallstones without surgery, medicines like chenodiol are prescribed. The only issue with these medicines is that you need to consume them for a long period of time to dissolve the stones completely.
