Overview

A Pilonidal Sinus is a hole or a depression in your skin which gets infected and fills up with pus. When it is infected, the name used to refer to this condition is ‘Pilonidal Abscess. It is formed at the base of your tailbone, right above the buttocks. Pilonidal abscesses are very painful.

The most common Pilonidal Sinus symptoms are extreme discomfort when sitting or standing.

People who have a sedentary job, requiring them to sit for several hours at a stretch are most prone to this condition. Automobile drivers or call centre employees, for instance, are susceptible to the formation of a pilonidal sinus which can eventually turn into a painful abscess.

Diagnosis

Pilonidal Sinus Diagnosis includes a simple physical examination after asking you some basic questions like:

  • When did you first experience the symptoms?
  • Has this problem occurred before?
  • Has the fever been persistent?
  • Are you taking any medication or supplement for this condition?

When you experience early symptoms of this condition, soaking the area in warm water can reduce the pain. It is also recommended that you keep the area dry and clean to prevent worsening of the condition.

This condition cannot be cured using antibiotics.

However, there are two options for complete Pilonidal Sinus Treatment:

  • Traditional surgery: There are two traditional techniques used:
    • Incision: A small incision is made into the abscess and the puss, hair follicles, and other contaminants are drained out. The wound is left open with a gauze dressing.
    • Marsupialization: The abscess is cut and drained by a Pilonidal Sinus specialist. Then the edges of the incision are stitched up. Surgical methods take between 3 to 6 weeks to heal completely. They may leave a scar in some cases where the abscess is large and deep.

Follow all the post-operative care procedures suggested by the Pilonidal Sinus specialist. This usually includes:

  • Removing and packing the gauze as suggested.
  • Keeping the area clean and dry
  • Checking for signs of any redness, soreness or bleeding after surgery.
  • Follow up with the doctor after the recommended period to ensure that the wound is healing.

In most cases, the condition does not recur after a surgical procedure. However, there are some measures that you can take to prevent recurrence:

  • Avoid wearing tight clothes
  • Keep the area clean
  • Make sure that it is dry
  • If you have a sedentary job, try to take breaks and walk around at regular intervals
  • Minimal access procedures
  • Short duration of procedures
  • Faster healing
  • Zero scarring
  • Painless surgical options
  • Short or no hospital stay
  • Skilled doctors from Safdarjung and AIIMs
  • Early rejoin of work
